How far would you go to keep a secret?

Journal Entry: Fri Nov 6, 2009, 8:26 AM

Secrets are a commonality.

Everyone has something that they can never tell anyone. Everyone has something they want to protect. The question is, how badly? To what lengths will you go to protect your secret?

Would you be willing to lie to someone you respected? How about lying to a friend? Would you destroy evidence? Threaten a person to silence them? Hurt them?

Would you be willing to kill someone?

Welcome to Synchronicity

Synchronicity will be a writing/roleplaying murder mystery designed for up to 8 people. It will be at the very least PG-13, and most likely NC-17, so if you get uncomfortable thinking about blood or scare easily, this isn't going to be for you. See Chapter 00 - if you don't like that, you really won't like what comes later.

If you choose to participate, you will be controlling one of the students at Swiftwater Academy (modern, normal earth setting - scroll down to get a blurb about the Academy). Specifically, you will be playing as a students of the school, who is somehow involved with the Swiftwater Enigma Club. The purpose of the club is, officially, to research and investigate myths, urban legends, ghost stories, alien sightings and the like, but in reality it basically functions as a social club for kids interested in mysteries.

It will be the job of the Enigma Club to SOLVE THE MYSTERY! Also, NOT GET KILLED BY THE BAD GUYS! And ALSO NOT GET KILLED BY EACH OTHER!

Joining Synchronicity

In order to join Synchonicity, you will need to make a character. Characters should be between 13 and 17 years of age, though younger or older characters are welcome, as long as some kind of explanation is provided. This IS a private highschool for the gifted and talented, after all, so backgrounds can be all over the place. They will be students at Swiftwater Academy, and must be involved with the Swiftwater Enigma Club in some way.

Each character will have a secret. It could be a crush on another character, a medical or psychological condition that they don't want to tell anyone about, an abusive childhood, or even a body buried somewhere, but the only people who will know about it will be the player, the character (or maybe not! lol amnesia!), and myself. It will NOT be known to the other characters/writers, and it will not be included in the public character sheet.

Once I have a bunch of characters submitted, I will select the most compatible eight and spend some time crafting the secrets into a whole and changing them so they interact with each other for maximum complication. I will then integrate all of these secrets into the larger plot that I have planned. (Yes, this means that I may ask you to re-write some of your character to participate, but I'm not going to be a dictator about it. It will be a joint creative process.)

Because I want these characters highly developed, I will be asking everyone to use the Cross-Genre Character Profile, though of course with only the human section. You can take out the non-human biology part.

The deadline for character submissions will be Saturday, November 21st, which is slightly more than two weeks from now (now being 1:10 PM on Thurs. Nov. 5th). Note me your characters, and remember, WHEN YOU POST THEM ON DA, DO NOT INCLUDE THE SECRETS SECTION!

and because we all love this kind of thing, I set up #enigmaclub as the chat HQ for this project. it will be all dolled up with ranks and titles and stuff soon

Structure and Submission Guidelines

We will be doing most of the writing/roleplaying for this adventure on my personal RP forum, Verdant Whispers, which means that you will need to register. I'm not really happy about taking any of this off DA, but the built-in DevArt forums don't offer the versatility and features that we'll be needing (read: they suck dick). You can click the link above of the stamp below to get to the forums.

I will be selecting which characters I want based on quality of writing, originality, and most importantly: how their secret will meld with the rest for maximum mayhem.

Setting Information

Welcome to the Swiftwater Academy for the Gifted and Talented, where children can truly unlock their full potential. Located in the rugged Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Swiftwater is a private school where children of unusual intelligence and ability can develop their knowledge and skills. The school emphasizes providing a focused environment, a fact aided by the dormitory-style living quarters and beautiful, natural surroundings. Cascading mountain streams and untouched forest surround the Academy, offering opportunities for unique environmental education and physical exploration while serving as an impediment to all the distractions that plague city-based and public schools. The campus itself is a spacious multi-building complex, recently upgraded from coal power to environmentally friendly solar and wind power.

Staff at Swiftwater Academy are professionals carefully selected for alternative teaching styles and long-term educational experience. Some of our staff were even students in the past who enjoyed the school so much that they, after obtaining their masters degrees, came back to teach! Every subject from English to Organic Chemistry can be accessed at Swiftwater, and classes are tailored to the needs and strengths of the students. Please contact Headmaster Montronst if you are interested in having your child attend.

Please note that contact with your child may be limited, in order to preserve the focused study environment of the school and also due to the remoteness of the campus.

Whew! Desire is finally off my frontpage!

And with that, I can get started on my next project, Synchronicity. Synchonicity will be a writing/roleplaying mystery designed for up to 8 people. If you choose to participate, you will be controlling one of the students at Swiftwater Academy (modern, normal earth setting). Specifically, you will be playing as a member of the Swiftwater Enigma Club. The purpose of the club is, officially, to research and investigate myths, urban legends, ghost stories, alien sightings and the like, but in reality it basically functions as a social club for kids interested in mysteries.

Why your character decided to join the club, whether they take it seriously, what they are interested in(detective novels? crop circles?): these things are up to you.

Characters should be between 13 and 17 years of age, though younger or older characters are welcome, as long as some kind of explanation is provided. This IS a private highschool for the gifted and talented, after all, so backgrounds can be all over the place.

The thing that I hope will set this little exercise apart from all the rest is this:
Each character will have a secret. It could be a crush on another character, a medical or psychological condition that they don't want to tell anyone about, an abusive childhood, or even a body buried somewhere, but the only people who will know about it will be the player, the character (or maybe not! lol amnesia!), and myself. It will NOT be known to the other characters/writers, and it will not be included in the public character sheet.

Once I have a bunch of characters, the real fun begins. I will spend some time crafting the secrets into a whole and changing them so they interact with each other for maximum complication. I will then integrate all of these secrets into the larger plot that I have planned. (Yes, this means that I may ask you to re-write some of your character to participate, but I'm not going to be a dictator about it. It will be a joint creative process.)

Once everything is blended and set to simmer, the writing will begin. I have yet to figure out exactly what the format will be in - either short story submission or real-time roleplaying - but we will all get together and interact. It will be the job of the Enigma Club to SOLVE THE MYSTERY! Also, NOT GET KILLED BY THE BAD GUYS! And ALSO NOT GET KILLED BY EACH OTHER, WHEN PEOPLE START DISCOVERING THE SECRETS!

This will not be a PG project, as you may have gathered from the usual stuff I do. I intend to use every ounce of High Octane Nightmare Fuel that I can.

Because I want these characters highly developed, I will be asking everyone to use the Cross-Genre Character Profile, though of course with only the human section. You can take out the non-human biology part.

I'll be updating this with more formazlied stuff (i.e. a timeline, more rule and guidelines and stuff) later, but I wanted to give everyone a taste now so you, IF YOU ARE SUPER DUPER INSPIRED, you can start working on it now.

and because we all love this kind of thing, I set up #enigmaclub as the chat HQ for this project. it will be all dolled up with ranks and titles and stuff soon

The Desire Tournament: an OCT for Writers.

Journal Entry: Sun Oct 18, 2009, 7:10 AM

CONGRATULATIONS.

The winner for the Desire Tournament is *ginchael

Results are thusly:
1st Place: *ginchael
2nd Place: =Tamasha
3rd-4th Places: ~bouncymischa , ~Demoness-Melody
5th-8th Places: ~TenyoSciurus , ~KasumiAlche , ~fancylances , ~Leohan
All of the picks have been taken. Some of you (actually all of you except Ginch because he got first shot at all the good stuff) were given an extra prize. One of the ones left was a 4x that I have to the four 4th tier winners, and then I flipped a coin over who got what was left. If you want to trade prizes, go ahead.

I will be noting the prize donators about who got what, but if you want to be proactive and note them yourself, please be my guest.

Also Tamasha you are not allowed to trade Orange-Ratchet's prize to anyone else.

EDIT: I've begun tentatively working on my next writing project, which, by the way, will NOT be a competition. It will be a group writing/roleplaying murder mystery, set in a modern setting. If you would like to know more about it, I will blogging about it on my livejournal inkadventure, as I don't want to bump Desire off my frontpage until it is finished.

Desire Tournament Rules

Journal Entry: Sat Nov 15, 2008, 12:18 PM

The Desire Tournament: Rules

Be advised that these rules can be updated as things progress.

Conduct

  1. Be sportsmanlike. Read: Don't be a dick.

  2. Expect to lose. This tournament is supposed to be fairly high-caliber, so there will be heavy competition. Remember, every round, ONE HALF of the players will be eliminated.

  3. Don't be offended when your OC sustains a heavy injury. An attack on your OC is not an attack against you, so again, don't be a dick.

Entries and Roleplaying

  1. There is no length limit on entries, but remember that entries are being judged on quality and not quantity.

  2. All rounds have a 10 day duration. Entry deviations need to be submitted by the deadline, or that player automatically loses. Entries must be noted to judges in a timely fashion as well.

  3. As the tournament progresses, PEOPLE WILL DIE. Be prepared for your OC to be killed off if you make it to the later rounds.

  4. Injuries sustained in one round carry over into the next.

  5. One OC entered per player. Teams of up to 3 multiple DA writers working together are allowed, as long as there is only one OC entered.

Judging Criteria

  • Writing Quality.

  • Accuracy of how you roleplay your opponent's OC.

  • Creativity and innovation.

  • Integration into existing storyline.

Judges do NOT need to explain their decisions, though they are welcome to do so if they choose.
